15 years of serving the needy 1999 was significant not only for marking our fifteenth year of existence, but most importantly for marking a milestone in the scale and quality of our work. We could not have imagined 15 or even 10 years ago, working from a single small office in Birmingham that in 1999 Islamic Relief would take a leading role in alleviating three major humanitarian disasters and a host of smaller crises with activities including shelter, relief and development programmes with seven figure budgets and hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries. The newsletter of Islamic Relief International edition Building peace and justice in Bosnia The Srebrenica and Zvornik municipalities witnessed the worst murder of Bosnian civilians by Serb Paramilitaries during the vicious Bosnian war, which ended in 1995. The most infamous incident was the deliberate killing of over 7000 Bosnian men who had sought shelter in the UN compound near Srebrenica town. Thousands are still missing from the war, buried in anonymous graves in the woods and the fields around. It also provides emergency humanitarian assistance to many countries around the world. It was one of the first charities to provide humanitarian relief in Bosnia, Chechnya and Kosovo. The relief work provided by Islamic relief is dependent on the nature of the disaster and the geographical location. Islamic relief also has an orphan project where people can personally sponsor an orphan or donate towards a general Orphan pot which would provide nutrition, medicine and education to the orphan. Islamic relief also works on seasonal projects such as Ramadan Iftar programme as well as Qurbani. These projects have become well established over the years and the beneficiaries are rising.   Islamic Relief in Bosnia and Herzegovina was established twenty years ago. Islamic Relief in the United Kingdom was established more than twenty six years ago as a solution to the suffering in the world. Today, with God’s mercy, it is one of the greatest humanitarian organizations with the branch offices in more than 40 countries in the world. We closely cooperate with local communities, governments, United Nations (we are a member of UN and signatory of the “Code of Conduct”) as well as with other NGOs fighting against poverty, suffering and social injustice.
