Welcome to the Autumn Issue of the IR Academy E-Newsletter IR Academy Leads the Establishment of New Consortium The Consortium can be used as a platform for developing training material for the humanitarian sector, addressing current gaps in the sector. With six other members bringing together academia and humanitarian and development organisations from the UK, USA and South Africa this is an exciting time for Islamic Relief. The Consortium includes, in addition to Islamic Relief the following core member organisations: ActionAid, Plan International, Coventry University, Praekelt.org, Osman Consulting and ACTION Support Centre. The process of formulating the consortium has already opened up new partnerships for Islamic Relief with a range of organisations that are at the cutting edge of technology in the NGO sector and have a long track record of learning provision for humanitarian workers. Research conducted by Mohammad Abdullah Nadwi, Markfield Institute of Higher Education, UK. This paper explores the concept of Waqf, its role in contemporary society and its growth, usage and methods of implementation. The programmes reveals that historically, Waqf was well established during the period of Islam’s establishment in the seventh century and went on to become utilised with a variety of driving forces across the growing Muslim world in the centuries which followed. However, having been marginalised as an effective social development tool in more recent generations, contemporary Muslim societies across the globe are now witnessing a revival of Waqf awareness and value. Furthermore, this study focuses on Waqf in Muslim minority environments, exploring contemporary Waqf usage in comparison to permanent legal trusts in England, offering tangible strategic and procedural proposals for the enhancement of effectiveness in contemporary Awqāf, particularly in the United Kingdom. In the broader context, we at Islamic Relief Academy are keenly engaged in exploring key issues around faith and development, including fiscal aspects of Islam, such as Islamic philanthropy, Waqf and Islamic microfinance. Consequently, published programmes can inform the development sector through empirically-based, evidential programmes in the field of Islam and development and, more broadly, lend our support for the positive value faith adds to humanitarian and development work. Islamic Relief Academy In this programmes, Abdulbaset Hamadi investigated faith-based donor behaviour in detail, remodelled it and proposed a new, practical model; generally applicable, though particularly suitable for Islamic institutions and donor circumstances specific to Muslim charitable giving. Additionally through his programmes into donor recipient interaction, Abdulbaset has recognised significant issues with respect to donor retention and has proposed solutions for receiving organisations to address these problems. He has articulated the importance that charities need to place on donor behaviour; why donors give to specific causes and not to others; and understood the determinants driving decision-making in donating to humanitarian organisations and causes. Furthermore, Abdulbaset has identified that existing models fail to go far enough, in that they cannot be universally applied to all charities and contexts as they do not recognise major determinants in donor decision-making, for example donor decisions required for products such as Zakah or Waqf, or under specific circumstances, such as during the holy month of Ramadan, in which donors have a significantly greater propensity for donating, regardless of the presence of an expressed or advocated need.   In this paper, the author, Shakil Butt, has demonstrated this to great effect - that Islamic Relief fits this model of organisational development well and the narrative of growth dynamics and its impact on values outlined is exemplified in Islamic Relief. Now a mature organisation with a thirty year history, over 3500 employees and across forty offices in all continents, organisational dynamics once reached a tipping point, which necessitated a clearly defined articulation of where Islamic Relief is and where Islamic Relief aspired to be, in terms of its organisation values. However, programmes about the role of founders and senior leadership in setting out a vision for the organisation they formed, if not properly documented, could be jeopardised beyond their departure. The combination of founders as elder statesmen and the rapid growth in Islamic Relief was a potential ‘perfect storm’ in terms of loss of organisational values and identity.   The Muslim world has a proud tradition of providing economic and social justice to their diverse citizenry during their ubiquitous leadership of the early Islamic period. To be relevant today and into the future, however, developing Muslim societies will need to re-examine their currently Euro-centric understanding and model of social advancement and strive to serve global equity through a more balanced philosophy, one that acknowledges their rich cultural heritage whilst simultaneously embracing the need for modernisation and economic advancement. Thus, the contemporary strategist in the Arab and Muslim world needs to reflect on the contribution to development of civilisation of early Islamic scholars. The principles for good governance - knowledge, justice, wisdom and tolerance, for example, were articulated by AlGhazzȃli nearly a millennium ago and have great resonance today. This paper proposes a paradigm shift in social and economic ethics, inspired by early Muslim practitioners, for creating sustainable, just and moderate Islamic societies in the twenty-first century.   Leadership as a topic can be studied from many different viewpoints including political military, social, religious or corporate. This paper aims to provide scholars with an analysis of religious perspective on corporate and social leadership. This paper focuses on Qur’anic scripture in relation to the qualities of leaders from an Islamic viewpoint and the scripture’s applicability to contemporary views on leadership. This work further examines leadership and its importance and growing role in the culturally diverse global economy. The intensification of debate between civilisations with divergent views on a plethora of issues has placed a spotlight on Islam and prompted a need for dialogue. This paper thus addresses the topic of leadership, with a view to continuing discourse amongst scholars seeking to learn from the richness of Islamic history.
