A DFID-FCO merger needs to remain off the cards

2020-01-20T08:00:19+00:00

Plans to merge the Department for International Department (DFID) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) appear to have been abandoned by Prime Minister Boris Johnson for now. The idea of a DFID/FCO merger has been debated numerous times since DFID’s separation from FCO in 1997, most recently resurfacing amidst the 2019 general elections and causing a stir among UK charities. Despite the merger being allegedly off the cards for the time being, rumours of a ‘compromise’ which would put the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, in control of both ministries has failed to ease many commentators and UK NGO staff. Two [...]

Alternatives to Aid: Mobilisation for Development

2020-01-15T08:00:29+00:00

There is an increasing number of critical voices that point to the limitations of conventional aid. In this blog post, R&D team member Madiha Zeb Sadiq looks at some of these criticisms and whether alternatives to aid exist. Fake “Aid”? There is an abundance of criticisms of foreign aid. One key concern for many critics is effectiveness and sustainability. Many poor countries are saddled with debt, and without sufficient development to justify it, the debt increases poverty, as the money spent on paying it off could have been invested in public infrastructure. Dambisa Moyo, a vocal critic of foreign aid argues [...]

INGOs and the Localisation Agenda

2020-01-01T08:00:28+00:00

January 1, 2020 INGOs and the Localisation Agenda INGOs presently dominate large parts of the humanitarian sector. They possess the capacity to build a presence where they are needed and the funds to implement multiple large-scale projects simultaneously. Localisation, on the other hand, is about decentralising power, money and resources in humanitarian and development aid. It’s about local actors influencing action and making decisions throughout - with international actors (including INGOs) stepping in only if and when necessary. What role do, can and should INGOs play in the localisation agenda? The benefits of localisation The benefits of localisation are clear. Local [...]

Civil society organisations, social media and capacity-building: Why we need to support CSOs operating in restrictive environments

2019-12-11T08:00:08+00:00

December 11, 2019 Civil society organisations, social media and capacity-building: Why we need to support CSOs operating in restrictive environments While the turn of the century saw many developed and developing countries in Africa enjoying civic freedoms, more recently, the trend is one of restricting and limiting civic space. This blog highlights some of the findings of research I undertook with civil society organisations across East and Southern Africa, where public spaces for debate are rapidly closing. How are restrictions being imposed? In some contexts, closing civic space means enacting legislation directly aimed at civil society organisations and their activities, restrictions [...]

The rise and reality of INGO domestic programming

2023-05-10T08:44:15+00:00

May 10, 2019 The rise and reality of INGO domestic programming There is a growing interest in the idea of INGOs running programmes in their home countries alongside their projects in the global south. These “domestic programmes” (DP) range from helping impoverished communities in the UK, Canada and the USA, to supporting refugees and asylum seekers entering Germany and Sweden. Some INGOs, like Islamic Relief Worldwide, are embracing domestic programming for numerous reasons, but this multi-mandate focus presents a range of challenges.   Why some international NGOs are working at home DP has traditionally been an issue that receives [...]
