“My year as a trainee with HAD has provided me with a fascinating insight to working in the Humanitarian sector, as well as enabling me to develop a number of skills to enhance my career”
Tom Goodwin
Programmes and Grants Coordinator
Tom’s journey with HAD began in February 2018, when he joined as a Research and
Development Intern, supporting the design and development of a community of practice project
for IR country offices in East Africa. He then transitioned into a one-year Programmes and
Grants Coordinator traineeship in the Business Development department, with a focus on
identifying and securing new funding opportunities, followed by the role of Programmes and
Grants Officer, until he assumed his current position as Programmes and Grants Coordinator in
January 2021. In this role, Tom is responsible for designing and implementing organisational
capacity building interventions throughout the entire project lifecycle – from identification and
design through to implementation, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and project closure.
Academically, Tom holds an undergraduate degree in Human Geography from Coventry University and a
postgraduate degree in International Development Studies, with a focus on poverty and inequality, from the
[T1]University of Birmingham.
Throughout his career, Tom has been inspired by the potential of long-term, sustainable
development, viewing capacity strengthening as a vital part of this process. His passion for the
sector is rooted in a belief in equity and justice for all, and through his work at HAD, he is proud
to contribute to the improvement of organisational learning and development — ultimately
helping to ensure that vulnerable communities around the world receive more effective,
impactful aid.
Outside of work, Tom enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing and watching
football, hiking, computer games, and travelling.
