An Act of Faith

2023-05-04T11:28:10+00:00

Humanitarian Financing and Zakat All of the world’s major religions contain some element of alms giving, and faith plays a key role in the funding and delivery of humanitarian response across the world. While we cannot say how much religiously motivated giving takes place globally each year, it is clear that faith-based organisations mobilise and channel a significant proportion of global humanitarian assistance, and are actively involved in its delivery. In 2013, faith-based organisations received and delivered between US$420 million and US$434 million (15–16%) of all international humanitarian assistance channelled through non-govermental organisations (NGOs). Keeping Faith in Development

2023-05-04T11:25:53+00:00

Increasing recognition has been given in recent years to the role that faith plays, both constructively and destructively, in the work of development and humanitarian aid organisations. Keeping Faith in Development explores how faith-based organisations can work across the religious divide and how better interfaith relations can improve their ability to deliver aid. The work of Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and World Jewish Relief, our partners in this project, shows that faith organisations are effective in a way that sets them apart from their secular counterparts. For example, they have a unique reach because they represent, and are respected by, their [...]

Women Farmers Perceptions about Climate Change

2023-05-04T10:22:25+00:00

Climate change is the defining human development challenge of our time. It threatens to stall poverty reduction and hard-earned progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It requires knowledge, skills and resources to adapt to the changing climate. Throughout South Asia, the early signs of climate change are already visible. Out of the last 12 years of the last century, 11 were the hottest of the last 400 years where temperatures in Pakistan reached 53 degree Celsius and in Finland 37 degrees Celsius. These changes are already threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions of individuals. This study investigates [...]

Islamic and Christian inspired relief NGOs: between tactical collaboration and strategic diffidence?

2024-05-29T15:30:25+00:00

This article focuses on the identification of different types of Islamic and Christian inspired relief NGOs. Four ideal types are outlined following a framework for the analysis of Religious NGOs. The possibilities of collaboration between these NGOs are investigated. The article argues that there is a greater likelihood of collaboration among NGOs closer to the moderate end of the framework. However, collaboration remains difficult on a strategic level and is often limited to a field based, tactical level cooperation. A broader mutual understanding is needed in order to improve global coordination between NGOs coming from different religious traditions. Analysing Cultural Proximity

2023-05-04T09:58:55+00:00

Based on fieldwork carried out on Islamic Relief’s relief programme for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, this article contributes to the debate on whether Muslim aid agencies bring added value when working with Muslim beneficiaries in Muslim areas. The author explores the significance of religion in relations between actors in the aid process and argues that a common religion does not necessarily override political, social, and cultural divisions. The article questions whether it is useful to claim that Muslim solidarity exists in the aid process when in practice it is difficult to have any meaningful engagement with religion in the field. After The Troops Withdraw

2023-05-04T09:54:45+00:00

NATO foreign and defense ministers are meeting in Brussels on April 18 and 19 to plan conferences in Chicago (May) and Tokyo (July) that will shape security arrangements and international aid in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of western troops in 2013 and 2014. Islamic Relief, one of the leading international aid organisations operating in Afghanistan, believes there are six key priorities for current and future humanitarian and development aid that donor governments need to seriously address at the Chicago and Tokyo conferences and beyond. Situation Analysis and Proposal Writing – Livelihoods in the Horn of Africa

2023-05-04T09:55:05+00:00

The causes of the current crisis in the Horn of Africa are resulting from a combination of factors that are linked to environmental change and political ecology. The continuous cycle characterised by drought impacts have been exacerbated through the cumulative effect, also known as the ratchet effect, where through repeated exposures to drought impacts increase vulnerability. Environmental changes, including changes in rainfall patterns from regular seasonal cycles to shorter and more intensive rainfall periods have impacted on rangeland regeneration. This has resulted in the degradation of pastures, this, increasing seasonal livestock migration. Such patterns have also increased livestock drop-outs and urban [...]
