2023-05-04T12:03:59+00:00

The second millennium development goal is to achieve universal primary education. By 2015, the global target is to ensure that children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling. It seems this target is very detached from the Iraqi reality. The education system in Iraq is facing complex challenges and demands. Thousands of schools all over Iraq have suffered tremendous neglect and under-funding during long years of war, UN economic sanctions and the current occupation, and internal strife. According to one survey carried out by the Iraqi Ministry of Education in early 2004*, [...]

Working for Better Child Health

2023-05-04T11:49:17+00:00

Doctor Maigari is head doctor at the Therapeutic Feeding Centre in Tillaberi, Niger and sees on a daily basis the impact of malnutrition on children. Established by Islamic Relief in 2005, the health centre provided nutritional support to hundreds of children suffering from severe malnutrition and their mothers during the food crisis. Now that the crisis is over the centre also offers medical care for children suffering from a range of health problems. But there are still large numbers of children being treated every month for malnutrition. Office http://www.islamic-relief.org/ Citation Islamic Relief Worldwide (2007). The same year, each of these organisations had received grants from Sida’s humanitarian division for projects in Pakistan after the earthquake (Plan and Islamic Relief) and in Malawi to assist drought [...]

Caring for Children

2023-05-04T11:37:45+00:00

Islamic Relief’s Orphan Welfare Programme Every year millions of children die because they do not have enough food, the water they drink is contaminated and they have no access to basic health care. An estimated 134 million children have also never been to school due to the effects of HIV/AIDS, natural disasters, conflicts and crippling poverty. They are missing out on a childhood and without support, they face a bleak future. We believe we can make a real difference to the lives of orphans and other vulnerable children. Whilst we work to alleviate poverty and suffering in many of the communities [...]

Community-based Climate Change Adaptation Khyber-Pakhtunkwa (KPK) Pakistan

2023-05-04T11:34:51+00:00

Climate change is the defining human development challenge of our time. It threatens to stall poverty reduction and hard-earned progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. In the countries of South Asian region, including Pakistan, the early signs of climate change are already visible. Out of the last 12 years of the last century, 11 were the hottest of the last 400 years where temperatures in Pakistan reached 53 degree C and in Finland 37 or so. These changes are already threatening the lives and livelihoods, health and well-being of millions, especially the poor and vulnerable, who lack the financial, [...]

An Act of Faith

2023-05-04T11:28:10+00:00

Humanitarian Financing and Zakat All of the world’s major religions contain some element of alms giving, and faith plays a key role in the funding and delivery of humanitarian response across the world. While we cannot say how much religiously motivated giving takes place globally each year, it is clear that faith-based organisations mobilise and channel a significant proportion of global humanitarian assistance, and are actively involved in its delivery. In 2013, faith-based organisations received and delivered between US$420 million and US$434 million (15–16%) of all international humanitarian assistance channelled through non-govermental organisations (NGOs). Keeping Faith in Development

2023-05-04T11:25:53+00:00

Increasing recognition has been given in recent years to the role that faith plays, both constructively and destructively, in the work of development and humanitarian aid organisations. Keeping Faith in Development explores how faith-based organisations can work across the religious divide and how better interfaith relations can improve their ability to deliver aid. The work of Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and World Jewish Relief, our partners in this project, shows that faith organisations are effective in a way that sets them apart from their secular counterparts. For example, they have a unique reach because they represent, and are respected by, their [...]
