Faith-inspired Action on Gender Justice in the Muslim World: A Programmatic Approach to Empowering Communities in Conflict Environments

2023-05-04T13:06:56+00:00

Literature on sexual violence in armed conflict indicates that rape and violence against women (VAW) prior to, during, and after conflict is extensive in scope and magnitude. Violence is often systematically used as a ‘weapon of war’ and may be physical, sexual, psychological, economic, or socio-cultural in nature and be perpetrated in private or public settings. Gender-based violence (GBV) is associated with increasing instances of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, unintended pregnancies, gynaecological problems, induced abortions, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriage, low birth weight, and foetal death. Women are often disempowered by exploitation, rape, the threat of rape, domestic [...]

Silent Truth

2023-05-04T12:59:28+00:00

The world today is beset by a new phenomenon to create a world in which religion is excluded from the major role it has always played in the expansion of civilisation. Few can deny the importance of religion throughout history and throughout human development. One can go so far as to say that without religious codes society would not have developed at the rapid successful pace at which it has and all the things we today take for granted would have been luxuries in which we would still be aspiring. “Positivophobia”

2023-05-04T12:56:38+00:00

This year Islamic Relief was invited to the United Nations Headquarters in New York for a seminar discussing Islamophobia and confronting intolerance. I was asked to be one of the panel speakers and proceeded to prepare a lengthy speech which tackled this thorny subject. A few days before I went to New York, however, I began to think about a second shorter speech would could be delivered instead of the longer one which I intended to hand out to the delegates. “Why Foreign Policy Matters”

2023-05-04T12:54:43+00:00

As an International Humanitarian Aid Agency, Islamic Relief has been privileged enough to work amongst a variety of people in many nations across the cultural, religious and international spectrum. This has, we feel afforded us the opportunity to learn a great deal about how so many diverse groups view those like us who play such a large part in their lives. I say learn because that, I feel, is what we are about. We are all students and should take the time to understand the feelings and views of others. Dialogue is the key to building bridges to those who have [...]

Conflicting Agendas, Converging Hopes

2023-05-04T12:52:39+00:00

Many People, including myself, are increasingly wearing of hearing about numerous lectures, meetings and conferences addressing the issue of dialogue. These gathering are perceived by some as being a waste of time, money and effort. Why? Because whilst we stand here talking and theorising, the public about which we like to speak does see nor feel any concrete results. Indeed, whilst we discuss these issues, the feelings of division, stigmatisations and isolation are steadily growing in many parts of the world and none of us is any safer. Syria Emergency Relief Operations In Turkey

2023-05-04T12:45:19+00:00

The crisis continues to deepen in Syria with a starkly worrying picture for the humanitarian situation. At least 2.5 million people are affected, and the UN estimates that up to 4 million people could be affected in the next coming months. Widespread damage and destruction to medical facilities have left large parts of the population without access to health care and many children are denied education as schools become collective shelters for IDPs or have been badly managed.
