Study of the Humanitarian Capacity of Plan Sweden SOS Children Villages Sweden and Islamic Relief Sweden Sida’s Division for Humanitarian Assistance regularly performs capacity studies of humanitarian actors to learn more about the organisations and to assess their capacity to carry out humanitarian relief programmes. The same year, each of these organisations had received grants from Sida’s humanitarian division for projects in Pakistan after the earthquake (Plan and Islamic Relief) and in Malawi to assist drought [...]

Caring for Children

2023-05-04T11:37:45+00:00

Islamic Relief’s Orphan Welfare Programme Every year millions of children die because they do not have enough food, the water they drink is contaminated and they have no access to basic health care. An estimated 134 million children have also never been to school due to the effects of HIV/AIDS, natural disasters, conflicts and crippling poverty. They are missing out on a childhood and without support, they face a bleak future. We believe we can make a real difference to the lives of orphans and other vulnerable children. Whilst we work to alleviate poverty and suffering in many of the communities [...]

2023-05-04T11:34:51+00:00

Climate change is the defining human development challenge of our time. It threatens to stall poverty reduction and hard-earned progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. In the countries of South Asian region, including Pakistan, the early signs of climate change are already visible. Out of the last 12 years of the last century, 11 were the hottest of the last 400 years where temperatures in Pakistan reached 53 degree C and in Finland 37 or so. These changes are already threatening the lives and livelihoods, health and well-being of millions, especially the poor and vulnerable, who lack the financial, [...]

An Act of Faith

2023-05-04T11:28:10+00:00

Humanitarian Financing and Zakat All of the world’s major religions contain some element of alms giving, and faith plays a key role in the funding and delivery of humanitarian response across the world. While we cannot say how much religiously motivated giving takes place globally each year, it is clear that faith-based organisations mobilise and channel a significant proportion of global humanitarian assistance, and are actively involved in its delivery. In 2013, faith-based organisations received and delivered between US$420 million and US$434 million (15–16%) of all international humanitarian assistance channelled through non-govermental organisations (NGOs). Keeping Faith in Development

2023-05-04T11:25:53+00:00

Increasing recognition has been given in recent years to the role that faith plays, both constructively and destructively, in the work of development and humanitarian aid organisations. Keeping Faith in Development explores how faith-based organisations can work across the religious divide and how better interfaith relations can improve their ability to deliver aid. The work of Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and World Jewish Relief, our partners in this project, shows that faith organisations are effective in a way that sets them apart from their secular counterparts. For example, they have a unique reach because they represent, and are respected by, their [...]

Women Farmers Perceptions about Climate Change

Climate change is the defining human development challenge of our time. It threatens to stall poverty reduction and hard-earned progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Islamic and Christian inspired relief NGOs: between tactical collaboration and strategic diffidence?

2024-05-29T15:30:25+00:00

This article focuses on the identification of different types of Islamic and Christian inspired relief NGOs. Four ideal types are outlined following a framework for the analysis of Religious NGOs. The possibilities of collaboration between these NGOs are investigated. The article argues that there is a greater likelihood of collaboration among NGOs closer to the moderate end of the framework. However, collaboration remains difficult on a strategic level and is often limited to a field based, tactical level cooperation. A broader mutual understanding is needed in order to improve global coordination between NGOs coming from different religious traditions. Analysing Cultural Proximity

2023-05-04T09:58:55+00:00

Based on fieldwork carried out on Islamic Relief’s relief programme for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, this article contributes to the debate on whether Muslim aid agencies bring added value when working with Muslim beneficiaries in Muslim areas. The author explores the significance of religion in relations between actors in the aid process and argues that a common religion does not necessarily override political, social, and cultural divisions. The article questions whether it is useful to claim that Muslim solidarity exists in the aid process when in practice it is difficult to have any meaningful engagement with religion in the field.
