The Four Eponyms of Sunni Islamic Jurisprudence

2023-05-03T12:00:42+00:00

The framing of Islamic law in the first four centuries of Islam is of great significance to scholars. During this period, the Islamic diaspora was in the earliest part of its development, establishing its identity and developing the foundations of its knowledge principles. These times were tumultuous; yet, at the same time, what occurred during these early centuries formed the bedrock upon which a further millennium of growth has taken place in this global religion. Many forces were interplaying during these early years in the context of Islamic law. “Independents,” who formed a majority of Islamic theorists, gradually disappeared and gave [...]

Feeling The Heat

2023-05-03T11:25:00+00:00

As climate change bites, natural disasters such as floods, drought and tropical storms are becoming more frequent and severe. The people paying the heaviest price are the world’s poorest communities, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. With the global economy stagnating, the international community can ill afford to throw ever-increasing amounts of emergency aid at the countries affected by these disasters. And poor communities can ill afford an approach that is content simply to pick up the pieces after disaster strikes, regardless of the cost in human lives and livelihoods. Bosnia Appeal: The charities that need your support

2023-05-03T10:50:19+00:00

ISLAMIC RELIEF, which works for distressed people of all races and religions, has delivered up to pounds 7m of aid to former Yugoslavia since 1991. Earlier this year the charity set up 26 programmes in Bosnia and Croatia, including rehabilitation and resocialisation of rape victims, sponsoring and caring for 40,000 orphans. The charity aims to supply wood and water to 50,000 families in Bosnia throughout the winter; it needs just under pounds 2m to achieve the aim. It reckons that one cubic metre of wood, costing pounds 18, is enough for a family of five for the winter. Office http://www.islamic-relief.org/ http://www.independent.co.uk/article-archive/ [...]

Reproductive Health Policy

2023-05-03T10:35:30+00:00

Poor reproductive health is an enormous problem in the developing world. More than half a million women die every year from pregnancy-related complications. Similarly, many of the estimated 100 to 140 million women who have undergone Female Genital Cutting (FGC) have their health jeopardised. In the 2004 Strategic Conference of Islamic Relief, reproductive health was classified by the majority of Islamic Relief staff as a top priority for which a policy was needed. A 2006 survey of Islamic Relief field partners confirmed that reproductive health is a pressing issue in the communities in which they work and reconfirmed the need to [...]

An Islamic Perspective on Fair Trade

2023-05-03T09:56:47+00:00

European and North American Fairtrade labelling bodies, non-governmental organisations and various faith-based organisations have all been instrumental in promoting fair trade. Indeed, for ethical and moral reasons, many Christian faith-based organisations have adopted a clear and unequivocal position in support of fair trade.6 Is an Islamic perspective on fair trade also supportive? Do Islamic principles and teachings encourage Muslim organisations to be equally active? And does an Islamic perspective provide additional insights? In order to address these questions, this paper presents an Islamic perspective on fair trade. It does this by outlining the key principles upon which fair trade is based, [...]

Educated Women Educated Nation

2023-05-03T08:54:43+00:00

Development in a nation is keyed to “development” among the country’s female population, as correlations between improvements for women, such as higher school enrollment and completion rates, and improvements for the society overall, such as lower birth and infant mortality rates continue to emerge. When development among women education, health, role in society, legal status, etc.) is progressing, it drives a wide variety of other positive developments for the society as a whole. The Influence of Faith on Islamic Microfinance Programmes

2023-05-02T14:39:09+00:00

Understanding poverty as a poverty of assets is to recognise that poor people have a diverse set of physical, human, social, and environmental assets. Assets can be tangible or potential and material or social, and individuals, households and communities can draw from them in times of need or crisis. A shortfall in these assets results in individuals living in poverty. Poverty as a breach of human rights is often understood, not as a form of poverty, but as a strategy through which poverty alleviation can be based on international law. Many agencies apply this notion through a Rights-Based Approach (RBA). RBAs [...]
