The Importance of Spiritual Capital within Human Development in Islamic Teaching

2023-05-04T08:36:05+00:00

In Islam, the basic goal of development is to create an environment that enables people to enjoy spiritual, moral and socio-economic well-being in this world and success in the Hereafter (falah). Such an environment can only be created in societies that work to remove sources of human deprivation in multiple dimensions. This paper agrees with the view of some scholars of the objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid al-Shari’ah); that there are five crucial dimensions of human development namely; spiritual (faith), human (life), educational (intellect), social (posterity) and economic (wealth). It therefore adopts the Maqasid as an Islamic framework for development. This [...]

Islamic Perspectives on Education

2023-05-04T08:18:26+00:00

According to the 2008 UNESCO Education for All Global Monitoring Report, at the end of 1999 less than one-third of the 800 million children under the age of six benefited from early childhood education. Of the 113 million children without access to primary education schooling, 60 percent of these were girls. Furthermore, some 880 million adults, the majority being women, were illiterate. Additionally, excluding the United States and Europe, approximately one in three countries in 2005 did not “constitutionally guarantee” a right for “free and compulsory primary education”. Countries have achieved progress since 2000, but much work remains to meet the [...]

Back from the Brink

10 ways the international community must address Somalia’s humanitarian crisis In Korsan camp near Mogadishu’s international airport, there is no getting away from the human cost of the worst food crisis of the 21st century. A large cluster of tiny graves on the northern side of the camp paints a tragic picture. Today Korsan is a place of refuge and relative safety for some of the tens of thousands of Somalis drawn to the country’s capital at a time when their crops and livestock have been wiped out by East Africa’s worst drought for 60 years. But in the early months [...]

2023-05-04T08:05:28+00:00

As well as providing a theoretical framework outlining the tenets upon which Islamic financing is based, this document provides practical advice on how such a programme may be structured; guidelines that can be followed when implementing a microfinance programme; as well as advice upon programme monitoring and evaluation. The target audience is organisations that wish to provide microfinance services that conform to Islamic financing principles. This document is, primarily, a practical manual written from a practitioner’s perspective. Office http://policy.islamic-relief.com Citation Khan,A (2008). The Four Eponyms of Sunni Islamic Jurisprudence

2023-05-03T12:00:42+00:00

The framing of Islamic law in the first four centuries of Islam is of great significance to scholars. During this period, the Islamic diaspora was in the earliest part of its development, establishing its identity and developing the foundations of its knowledge principles. These times were tumultuous; yet, at the same time, what occurred during these early centuries formed the bedrock upon which a further millennium of growth has taken place in this global religion. Many forces were interplaying during these early years in the context of Islamic law. “Independents,” who formed a majority of Islamic theorists, gradually disappeared and gave [...]

Feeling The Heat

2023-05-03T11:25:00+00:00

As climate change bites, natural disasters such as floods, drought and tropical storms are becoming more frequent and severe. The people paying the heaviest price are the world’s poorest communities, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. With the global economy stagnating, the international community can ill afford to throw ever-increasing amounts of emergency aid at the countries affected by these disasters. And poor communities can ill afford an approach that is content simply to pick up the pieces after disaster strikes, regardless of the cost in human lives and livelihoods. Bosnia Appeal: The charities that need your support

2023-05-03T10:50:19+00:00

ISLAMIC RELIEF, which works for distressed people of all races and religions, has delivered up to pounds 7m of aid to former Yugoslavia since 1991. Earlier this year the charity set up 26 programmes in Bosnia and Croatia, including rehabilitation and resocialisation of rape victims, sponsoring and caring for 40,000 orphans. The charity aims to supply wood and water to 50,000 families in Bosnia throughout the winter; it needs just under pounds 2m to achieve the aim. It reckons that one cubic metre of wood, costing pounds 18, is enough for a family of five for the winter. Office http://www.islamic-relief.org/ http://www.independent.co.uk/article-archive/ [...]
