As an International Humanitarian Aid Agency, Islamic Relief has been privileged enough to work amongst a variety of people in many nations across the cultural, religious and international spectrum. This has, we feel afforded us the opportunity to learn a great deal about how so many diverse groups view those like us who play such a large part in their lives. I say learn because that, I feel, is what we are about. We are all students and should take the time to understand the feelings and views of others. Dialogue is the key to building bridges to those who have traditionally opposed us and it is the best method strengthening ties with those we already call friends. And this is what this paper is all about. It is the transcript of a speech I gave in Birmingham, UK before an invited audience of future ambassadors, diplomats, politicians and policy maker about what I felt was the impact of foreign policy. In the short space of time allowed it could be nothing more than a taster for what is a complex subject, but it did result in some very interesting discussions. I pray that this small drop in an already vast ocean similarly provides some food for thought. As I say in the opening remarks, it was intended to provoke discussion and I want this process to continue. I would be delighted is anybody who reads this wished to discuss some of the points raised and, in doing, adding to my limited knowledge of a very important subject. We need to talk and learn from each other at a time when simple talking seems to be a dying art. Future generations demand it of us. We must not disappoint.
