What is Distinctive About FBOs?

2024-06-06T09:30:25+00:00

How European FBOs define and operationalise their faith 'Faith matters’ in development. Faith-based organisations (FBOs) have historically been in the forefront of service delivery and social movements in development, but have been disregarded by donors for decades. Religion has largely been viewed as anti-developmental. To survive in such a secular climate, many Faith-based organisations in Europe have downplayed their faith identity. But as the aid climate changes from ‘estrangement’ to ‘engagement’ with faith (Clarke and Jennings 2008), so FBOs are reassessing what their faith identity means to them and how it influences their work. The Dutch government recently surprised some church-related [...]

2023-04-17T11:38:27+00:00

But it’s not all about water! From just a drop…. Islamic Relief began in 1984, when Dr. Hany El Banna, a young medical student, visited Sudan. After his visit he desperately wanted to raise funds to help the suffering, droughtstricken people. The first donation was just 20p! ….to a constant stream Today, Islamic Relief distributes millions of pounds around the globe, reaching the people who need it most. Translating Faith into Development

2023-04-17T11:35:49+00:00

Over the last two decades there has been a growing interest in the role of faith in development and in particular the role of Muslim faith based development organisations (FBOs). Despite the growth in the number of these organisations there has been little analysis of how Islamic teachings relating to the poor and needy have influenced their operational strategy. Charitable giving is a central theme in Islam and Muslim FBOs facilitate the collection of funds from Muslim donors and their distribution to the poor in other areas of the world. Traditionally their work has focused on emergency relief work and short [...]

Environment and Islam

2023-04-17T09:57:42+00:00

Islam encourages people to protect the earth and life on it, and to maintain the balance in nature as created by God. We live, however, in a world of pollution, deforestation, climate change and desertification, and in this world, environmental concerns are often forgotten in favour of economic benefit. Yet the problems caused by environmental degradation will not only affect future generations, they already threaten the world's population today. The Islamic environment worldwide is based on the five aims of Islamic legal system called the Shariah. The Shariah aims to protect religion, life, mind, offspring and property.
