We’re working to support local organisations responding to the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
Sudan is currently facing the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with 33.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. More than 11 million people have been displaced by war since April 2023, while 24.6 million are currently facing acute food insecurity. Community groups and national NGOs (NNGOs) have been at the forefront of the response, delivering vital life-saving assistance to those in need, but operating with limited resources and capacity.
Transforming Aid through Training for Humanitarian Impact and Response (TATHIR)
In response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, HAD partnered with RedR UK, in collaboration with the H2H Network, to deliver the Transforming Aid through Training for Humanitarian Impact and Response (TATHIR) project. Implemented between June 2024 – February 2025 as part of a wider H2H-funded response, this joint initiative addressed the capacity strengthening needs of local responders, helping to contribute to a more effective, resilient, and locally led humanitarian response to the crisis in Sudan.
HAD’s role centred on strengthening the institutional capacity of 21 NNGOs to effectively manage, govern, and finance their organisations. This involved conducting a comprehensive Organisational Capacity Assessment (OCA), followed by a programme of in-person training courses, structured online coaching sessions, and peer-to-peer learning exchange workshops.
The OCA findings were combined with a Learning Needs Assessment conducted by our partners at RedR UK, to form one comprehensive Summary LNA & OCA Report. This was shared widely within the humanitarian community in Sudan, and made freely available to be other capacity-strengthening providers and Sudanese NNGOs themselves.
Based on the findings of the OCA, HAD delivered 6 in-person contextualised training workshops in both Port Sudan and Gedarif, and 56 tailored coaching sessions in the following topics:
- Organisational Management & Governance
- Humanitarian Human Resources
- Financial Management & Sustainability
Impact
The TATHIR project ended with 2 Learning Exchange Workshops delivered in Port Sudan and Gedarif with participants joining from all 21 NNGOs. This gave participants the opportunity to reflect on the learning they had gained during the project, share how this had been applied to their organisations, and develop action plans for further organisational development beyond the end of the project. The learning and improvements made by organisations during this project will ensure they are better equipped to continue delivering vital life-saving assistance to the Sudanese people. By strengthening the organisational capacity of national NGOs in this way, HAD is contributing to a more effective, resilient, and locally led humanitarian response to the crisis in Sudan.

What does TATHIR mean?
The project name, TATHIR, is an acronym for Transforming Aid through Training for Humanitarian Impact and Response. Tathir means impact in Arabic, which is what we aim to achieve through this project. Through supporting local organisations and equipping local responders, we can create the greatest impact to support the people in Sudan affected by this devastating crisis.
